What are the benefits of installing a Structured Wiring System in the home that I am building?

This was one of the most frequently asked questions at the home show.  The short answer is convenience and reliability.  How many times have you experienced the frustration of wanting to relocate the television or computer to another corner of a room but you can’t because the antenna/cable tv/satalitte/network cable would run across a door opening.  Maybe you have had to join together pieces of telephone cables to reach the outlet and you drop calls because the cable keeps falling out of one of the couplings.   These are just a few of examples of issues that can be alleviated with a properly designed and installed Structured Wiring System.

We offer services to assist homeowners with the design of the Structured Wiring System.  Our approach is to work with you and your builder to make the correct choices of products and installation locations to reduce the frustrations as you live in your new home.

If you currently have a home with a Structured Wiring System installed and are having problems or are not sure how to use it we can help.  Just give us a call.

What are those colored markings in my yard and on the street that seem to just appear overnight?

Most likely those colors that you see are an important piece to the construction process.  They are either from a land survey or from a Utility Locating Company.  The markings may indicate that there are cables or pipes buried under ground in an area or show the property lines and construction easements.

Any time a contractor or home owner is going to perform work that requires excavation of the land he is required by law to contact the local Utility Locating Company, also known as Miss Utility, before the project starts.  The reason behind this is to protect the life of the people doing the work and to prevent any accidental damage to the public infrastructure that we all depend on.  The service is free and contact should be made at lease 48 hours before excavation is scheduled to begin.  In northern Virginia the number to use is 1-800-552-7001.  For more information on Virginia’s Miss Utility Law go to www.missutilityofvirginia.com.  In case you were wondering here is what the colors indicate is buried under the ground:

White – Proposed Excavation

Pink – Temporary Survey Markings

Red – Electric Power Lines, Cables, Conduit and Lighting Cables

Yellow – Gas, Oil, Steam, Petroleum or Gaseous Materials

Orange – Communication, Alarm or Signal Lines, Cables or Conduit

Blue – Potable Water

Purple – Reclaimed Water, Irrigation and Slurry Lines

Green – Sewer and Drain Lines
